Dear Mr. Burd [CEO of Safeway],

I encourage you not to cut the health benefits for your employees in California. There is absolutely no reason to turn working class jobs into working poor jobs, and your fight to decrease wages over the next contract period will have devastating consequences for your workers who depend on those jobs to support themselves and their families.

Maybe national supermarket chains such as Safeway should encourage Wal-Mart to pay its service-sector workers the same wages and benefits that your workers currently enjoy, instead of your trying to slash labor costs to compete with your big box rival.

This strike is a real opportunity to show your support for employees and to take a stand against a race to the bottom in service sector wages. I can only hope that you agree.
