scientist's put money where their mouth's are
This article from today's nyt is really exciting. Pat Brown at Stanford has been campaiging for the past several years to encourage journals to allow public downloading of their research articles (now you basically have to be at a university to get them). After a lot of opposition from publishers (who claim that the millions of dollars they make every year off liscensing fees is in danger of evaporating), some scientists have decided to start 2 online peer reviewed journals that will be open to the public. This is great for people who do research in third world countries or at less wealthy institutions, that cannot often afford to pay ALL of the liscensing fees for access to journal articles. GO SCIENTISTS!
